Emergency Services and Health CareHere in the Los Angeles area, as in most places, if you have an emergency and require immediate medical, fire or police assistance, dial 911. If possible, make the call from a land line, not a cell phone; this will enable the 911 dispatcher to track the exact location where the call is coming from. Once you have answered the operator’s questions, always stay on the line until the emergency operator tells you it is okay to disconnect. In any event, it is important to have an established emergency plan for you and your family in the case of a natural disaster emergency, such as an earthquake, fire, landslide or flood. As these events happen infrequently and, when they do, most LA residents go unaffected, they should not be a huge concern; however, it is always wise to simply be ready. Southern California offers many disaster preparedness programs such as the Earthquake Hazards Program- http://pasadena.wr.usgs.gov.
Other disaster preparedness resources include the City of LA Fire Department- www.lafd.org, the City of LA Community Emergency Response Team- www.cert-la.com, the Emergency Preparedness Commission for the County and Cities of Los Angeles- http://lacoa.org, the LA County Fire Department- www.lacofd.org, and the Southern California Earthquake Center- www.scec.org.
