This can be done by either renting a moving truck to transport everything, or hiring movers to do it for you. Or perhaps you would like to do both, hiring movers to take care of the bulky items, and move all the breakables or more manageable items yourself. Checking the Yellow Pages under “Truck Rental” will also list some more local companies, giving you the opportunity to call around and compare prices. Many of these companies will offer packing accessories and storage facilities for an additional cost. Try to rent the vehicle as far in advance as possible, especially if you plan to move on a Saturday, the most popular moving day. Once on the way to your new home, it is important to remember that your moving truck is a target to thieves, and should not be left parked for long periods of time, especially overnight.

It is extremely important when hiring a moving company, to remember that the moving business (especially interstate) is mostly unregulated and produces thousands of unhappy, ripped off customers every year. Therefore, because this industry is basically left to its own devices to run itself, it is up to the customer to ask around, and thoroughly research any company that is being considered for the job. Check for complaints with the Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.org), or FMCSA’s Household Goods Consumer Complaint site (www.1-888-dot-saft.com). In the event that there was a problem with the move due to the fault of the moving company, file a written claim for loss or damage. If it is an interstate move and this does not seem to have much affect, call 800-366-4782 to file a complaint with the CPUC.
