Downtown Los AngelesOne of the oldest parts of the Los Angeles city scape and one of its newest residential neighborhoods, Downtown is being rediscovered and re-imagined as a highly desirable address. Following the earliest days of Olvera Street, as bank buildings, courthouses and government offices replaced modest houses, few people could claim the area as home. But through the second half of the 20th century, downtown reclaimed its importance with the construction of critically-acclaimed theatres and music venues, sports facilities, convention center, museums, high-rise office buildings, and dozens of chic hotels and restaurants.
Industrial buildings were converted to artists’ lofts, which were in turn converted to elegant condominiums. High-rise condos were built alongside office and shopping complexes for a growing population of residents who appreciate the city center’s pedestrian-friendly cultural riches and the ability to walk to downtown workplaces. According to the Downtown Center Business Improvement District, since 1999, over 7,000 units have been added to the market and another 7,200 are under construction with approximately 16,700 in the pipeline.
