HollywoodA place-name that resonates worldwide, Hollywood’s recent past captures the essence of Southern California history: Spanish ranchos and flourishing agriculture followed by sub-divisions built to appeal to visitors seeking refuge from Midwestern winters. At the end of the 19th century, Hollywood Boulevard, known as Prospect Avenue, was lined with impressive residences. Schools, churches and a library were built nearby. The first film studio was opened in 1911 and over the next 20 years, Hollywood Boulevard became the glamorous hub of the burgeoning film industry. The famous HOLLYWOODLAND sign was erected in 1923 (later losing its last four letters) and the community was populated with actual and aspiring movie stars and the scores of people involved in movie-making.
From low-lying Melrose Avenue up to the foothills, Hollywood is still criss-crossed by streets lined with movie and television production studios with narrow side streets and clusters of vintage California bungalows in between. A number of classic condominium buildings offer full-service living within the heart of movie-land. Today, in recognition of its historic importance, Hollywood Boulevard is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. In addition to its movie palaces, including the new Kodak Theatre, home of the annual Academy Awards gala, Hollywood is home to marvelous restaurants, hundreds of shops, museums, and the famous Griffith Park Observatory.
